Woodworking Fundamentals
An introduction to the basics for those of us who have never touched a tool before.

Many people become working professionals in fields that do not require traditional tools like saws, planers, hammers, or wood chisels. Despite not having experience with hand tools, there is a sizeable amount of people that really want to get into the joy and satisfaction of working with one’s hands.

We created the Woodworking Fundamentals classes to introduce people to the tools and foundational skills needed to begin their journey into the world of woodworking.

We consulted with several professional woodworkers, carpenters, and even leading woodworking publications such as Lost Art Press and Mortise and Tenon Magazine what skills they felt should be introduced to every novice.

Based on their feedback, we created four classes:

  • Introduction to Handtools

  • Tool Sharpening

  • Basic Edge Tool Use

  • Basic Joinery

The classes can be taken in a row, or a la carte, but they are intended to build on each other. Those students that take all four classes will use their skills to create a handy carpenter’s toolbox.

Woodworking is an important skill in our overseas work where we rely on it to make yokes from draft animals and components to farming equipment like planters.
