Oxen Basics in August The August Oxen Basics class introduced eight more students to the technique of Ox Driving. Seven of the students were experienced with cattle; Carol Bond has a young Jersey steer at home, started with many of the commands it will need. Paul Eisenbarth and Marney Cuff came down from Canada where they raise Red Poll, Linebacks, and American Bison for organic beef. They aim to train a pair of their Linebacks. Stanley and Tricia Reed are volunteering with the Mennonite Central Committee in Bolivia and will be working with farmers. Ron Heebink came with experience in training and working oxen, but wanted to touch up on his skill, and get more advice and experience. Ian Reed brought his Red Holstein steers. They were all able to do field work and the steers showed much improvement. Craig Goodlock took some time out from his work at Farmers Bank. The students practiced road maintenance and excavation, mowed and raked hay and did a fair bit of plowing and disking. With two teams of calves to work, people had ample time to practice training techniques. Tim Harrigan spoke on draft and workload expectations. His research will be particularly helpful to Tricia and Stanley, who will be working with smaller cattle and single horses. During the yoke making sessions, John was able to give everyone a short lesson in the blacksmith shop. Ron even made his single yoke with all hand tools. When it came time for the final obstacle course with a load, it became very apparent how advanced everyone had become. Carol took first place with her adept handling of Rough and Slick, especially backing the forecart into the 'Shed'. |
