Gothic Chest with Clay Spencer - 318

Clay says of this class: “Come to this class to use sheet metal, angle and 75 rivets to construct a small chest with a handle, hinges, lid, lock, and key. It is similar to Gothic designs in which clergy, royalty, and the rich used to carry their gold and jewels. It includes some chasing and filing with a fire scaled surface. You will use many jigs to make the parts.” PREREQUISITE: Blacksmithing I and II or equivalent experience. Clay was raised on a farm in north Alabama and has had a lifelong interest in metalworking. He earned 2 engineering degrees from Auburn and worked at Marshall Space Flight Center until he retired in 1988. He started blacksmithing in 1986 and teaching in 1987 and was a student in all Francis Whitaker’s classes at John C. Campbell Folk School. He took over Francis’ classes in the mid 1990s. He designed and led workshops all over the US to build treadle hammers and tire hammers.
