Many people who become interested in blacksmithing after taking a class at Tillers International or other places where more modern forges and equipment are used sometimes believe that taking up blacksmithing as a hobby will necessitate purchasing lots of equipment. Much of the work of Tillers training internationally involves working only with the materials at hand. This also makes long term development of the area more sustainable as the equipment used can be reproduced and repaired from locally available resources, without dependence on expensive or foreign supplies.
So, whether you are in a developed country or not, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to set up your blacksmith shop. Come to the Shade Tree Blacksmithing class and practice working with simple forges and blowers to heat your metal. Use junkyard “anvils” for forging and bending. Make some useful tools to help get yourself started. Some previous blacksmithing instruction is recommended.
