Volunteering

How you can help

Tillers' Mission
is to preserve, study, and exchange low-capital technologies to increase the sustainability and productivity of rural communities.

Tillers' Vision
is to share our rural heritage with the world in a humble way that offers understanding of local conditions, gives promise for generations to come, and encourages an attitude of experimentation.

Tillers' volunteers play a critical role in our goal of sharing our rural heritage with the world. Whether it be a few hours on a regular basis or an extended stay to carry out some specific activity, our volunteer family makes it possible for our staff members to focus their skills and expertise where they have the greatest impact.

Volunteer Coordinators and Volunteers are needed for each of the following areas:

·Guest House (maintaining & providing fresh linens, cleaning, locating needed furnishings, stocking pantry with supplies, meal preparation for workshops)
· Farm work (cleaning barn and spreading manure, building fence, field work and animal care)
· Market Garden (hand weeding, transplanting, harvesting, Saturday market sale)
· Metal Shop Projects (Metal sorting, shelving)
· Wood Shop Projects (Wood sorting, splitting peg stock, help in sawing logs, small projects)
· Historical Collection Projects (Cataloging, research, exhibit development, janitorial maintenance
· Facilities Maintenance & Development (painting, plumbing, electrical and construction projects)
· Office/Mailings
· Events (Fairs, MODA gathering)
· Trail and Lawn Maintenence

Coordinators should be willing to:

Work with a diverse group of volunteers of varying ages, skills, and personalities.
Spend time recruiting volunteers for specific activities and tasks.
Schedule group and individual activities to assist and enhance the work of Tillers' staff
Provide instruction for the tasks to be done, or contact with staff project managers
Develop positive rapport with potential volunteers and staff
Follow projects to completion including appropriate thank you notes and recognition
(The specific hours needed will depend on the time of year, jobs to be done, number of volunteers needed, and personal time available. The duration of the assignment is negotiable)

Volunteer Rewards

Knowing that you are making a contribution to those in need around the world and the joy and fellowship of being part of the Tillers family of volunteers is a feeling that isn't quantifiable, and the skills learned by participation are hard to come by in conventional classrooms, so our "OxBucks" are one way for us to say thanks. If you're coming from a distance, there is opportunity to stay at the Guesthouses.

Tillers' Response Form

Use the Tiller's Response form to tell us about yourself or pass along your ideas and comments. The Form can also be used to request a Class Schedule or Tillers Catalog of quality products and hard-to-find publications.
